Relay for Life
29.05.2010 | 30.05.2010
Majlis Sukan Negara, Bukit Jalil
Celebrate. Remember. Fight back.

this is the field looking fantastic at 2pm, before it rained and rained and rained. we completely ruined the field after the 16 hours - you should have seen the mud. we walked around barefoot! It was horrifying.

It's hard to find words for the experience, somehow. What did we do for 20 hours?
Volunteer: ushering, balloon blowing, ice-cream eating, evolved to us - ju vern suraj xiao qi ming ying q-en ying ying rita sarah jo ann yew chong mugilan - sitting around in circles and laughing.
Sing, dance, listen, watch: there was a stage on the field, where we crowded around and sang Heal the World, danced to Glee, listened to Just Stand Up and Stand by Me, watched a 'Miss Relay' pagent.
Walk: around the track, and occasionally run around it when taking part in a scavenger hunt looking for the person with the longest hair or Dr. Delilah's mum at 3 in the morning.
Take pictures: of course.
Meet people: Syn Dee, Jason, Sheau Wei and the team, Jeremiah, random Intec people wandering around, Ian from Monash whom we bullied into giving us a cenderahati.
and at random times in the night: collect free samples of Milo; pledge to drive safely; marvel at syn dee's athletic friends; get a foot massage; inspect the portable toilets; plan trips around the country, talk!

Randomness aside, tiredness aside, the night was about cancer survivors and the fight against cancer. Watching the purple-clad cancer survivors walk past us, heads held high, smiling - it was amazing. For them to brave the rain, for them to make the effort to support the cause was inspiring and selfless. Grace, and dignity. Strength.
And then there were the cancer survivors who surpassed even that. We dragged Suraj to take a picture with this aunty dressed as a clown. Because he didn't like clowns. No deeper reason. But then I saw her smile as we took the picture and thanked her. Beauty.
Celebrate life. Remember love. Fight back.

Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrival gates at Heathrow airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that
love actually is all around

What if you slept?
And what if, in your sleep, you dreamed?
And what if, in your dream, you went to heaven and there plucked a strange and beautiful flower?
And what if, when you awoke, you had the flower in your hand?
Ah, what then?
-Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire,
I hold with those who favour fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

Tyger! Tyger! burning bright,
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?
In what distant deeps or skies
Burnt the fire in thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand dare seize the fire?
And what shoulder, and what art?
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand, and what dread feet?
What the hammer? What the chain?
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? What dread grasp
Dare its deadly terrors clasp?
When the stars threw down their spears,
And watered heaven with their tears,
Did he smile his work to see?
Did he who made the Lamb, make thee?
Tyger! Tyger! burning bright,
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?
- The Tyger, William Blake

I MISS JASON MRAZ
wake up everyone how can you sleep at a time like this
The Rock Zone tickets.
I swear, the next time I am getting the closest tickets to the stage. Malaysia, contrary to popular belief, has loads of very tall people. They converge at concerts to annoy short people. For example, me.

Purple 'Birthday Girl' button which they pinned on me. Halfway through the concert, in the dark, someone spotted it, wished me happy birthday, and the whole gang started the birthday song. Love the spontaneity!

These two very sporting guys came to Jason Mraz with us. Sylvester declared it 'fantastic'. He didn't have to tiptoe every two seconds to attempt a glimpse of Jason Mraz's head. The guy behind us carried his girlfriend on his shoulders for a while!

The screen I watched when I was tired of peering through LOTS OF HEADS. Just look at Jason Mraz. *fangirls* He is a great great
great performer.
Perfect singing, interjected with quirky statements like 'are you feeling ... elevated?' and 'who's here with your best friend ... because you're crazy in love with them?' and 'here's what I have to say to you - don't let your mind get in the way of having a great time tonight!'

Songs performed: I'M YOURS. Lucky. You and I Both. The Remedy. Beautiful Mess. Make It Mine. If It Kills Me. The Dynamo of Volition. Live High. Butterfly. Curbside Prophet.
For days after the songs still echo.

Between who you are and who you could be
Between how it is and how it should be

Beautiful song. I just realised.
I may complain about SAM alot, but you know what? I am content.

Two snapshots:

#1 Our math exam papers have squares on them. They freak me out because I try to fit one letter/number in one box, and I go crazy trying to center align fractions.
Those there are my lab goggles. They are not very useful but they look very cool. Oh, and that's the infamous GC - graphic calculator. It's horrible. Ask me why.
Colourful book over there is Taylor's student planner. It's for us to note down deadlines and exam dates because there are just so many of them to remember! I don't really use it though.

#2 My lunch the other day. Two blobs of rice because I substituted chips. I didn't finish it. I need a guy to come to Taylor's Subang so I can give them excess food.
EVERY SINGLE DAY we stand at the guard house and debate over where to go for lunch. So in Malaysian Studies that day we made an evelope full of choices so we could draw lots. Now we pick out lunch venues, then argue over the choices the evelope gives us.

Romeo & Juliet
star-cross'd lovers
Romeo
Juliet
Prince
O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright.Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight,
For I ne'er saw true beauty till this night.
But, soft! what light through yonder window breaks?
It is the east, and Juliet is the sun!
O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo? ...O, be some other name! What's in a name? That which we call a roseBy any other word would smell as sweet.
Good night, good night. Parting is such sweet sorrow,
That I shall say good night till it be morrow.
Mercy but murders, pardoning those that kill.
Thou canst not speak of that thou dost not feel!
O, here will I set up my everlasting rest,
And shake the yoke of inauspicious starsFrom this world-wearied flesh.
Romeo, I come! This do I drink to thee. For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Juliet and her Romeo.

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways...
by Elizabeth Barett Browning
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of everyday's
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with a passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints, --- I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life! --- and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.

There is good and there is evil, right and wrong, heroes and villains. And if we are blessed with wisdom, then there are glimpses between the cracks of each where
light streams through.
We wait in silence for these times when sense can be made, when
meaningless existence comes into focus, and our purpose presents itself.
And if we have the strength to be honest, then what we find there staring back at us is our own reflection, bearing witness to the duality of life. That each one of us is capable of both the dark and the light, of good and evil,
of either,
of all.And destiny, while marching ever in our direction, can be rerouted
by the choices we make, by the love we hold onto, and the promises we keep.
