She smiled. He didn’t.
They were falling apart, a mutual repulsive force between them like the north poles of two magnets.
He had changed, she thought.
She had changed, he thought.
They both wondered if the other knew; if the other saw the doubt and the fear and the insecurity in their eyes.
Why force themselves to drift together and apart – walking almost parallel paths – when they could not reach out to each other,
Could not draw comfort
Could not
Could not
She was lonely more often than he was
He thought of her less and less
Except on days when he needed her
But could not, did not have her there
She
Would have gone to him in an instance
But there was a wall stopping her and pushing her backwards
It had a thousand angry eyes and mocking smiles
do you think he wants you there?
It had beautiful faces and perfect silhouettes painted on
They laughed at her
And she could not look away
So she withdrew into herself and hid herself away
She painted her own wall of
football players and lifeguards and her.
When he looked her way again, he saw
Them
And her
Without him.
He wrapped himself in fire
She froze herself in ice
And together they
destroyed the world.
